A Journey Through Art: Istanbul to Wisconsin
In the intricate tapestry of life, few threads are as vibrant and soul-stirring as the ones woven by art. My own story is a testament to the transformative power of art and the incredible journey it has led me on, from the historic streets of Istanbul to the welcoming heart of Wisconsin.
Istanbul: Where My Artistic Journey Began
For 11 unforgettable years, Istanbul was my home—a city that holds a special place in my heart for a multitude of reasons. It was here, amidst the bustling life of the Grand Bazaar and the serene beauty of the Bosphorus, that I began a new chapter of my life. Istanbul was not just a backdrop to my personal milestones, such as getting married and welcoming my daughters into the world; it was also the cradle of my artistic awakening.
In this city of unparalleled beauty and cultural richness, I was introduced to the exquisite art of Ebru, or Turkish marbling. This unique form of art, characterized by its mesmerizing patterns and vibrant colors, captivated my heart and soul. Istanbul, with its deep-rooted traditions and innovative spirit, became the perfect teacher, guiding me through the delicate dance of colors on water, leading to the creation of marbled wonders on silk.
From Istanbul to Wisconsin: Carrying the Light of Ebru
Though life's journey eventually took me far from the cobblestone streets of Istanbul, the essence of the city and its art has never left me. Settling in Wisconsin, I found myself yearning for a connection to my past, a bridge between my two worlds. It was through Ebru that I found this connection, not just to my memories, but to the hearts of others.
Recently, while teaching a silk marbling class at Studio Barcelona Milwaukee, I encountered a participant with a deep connection to Istanbul. She shared stories of her annual visits to the city to source handmade merchandise for her store. Our conversation, filled with shared memories and admiration for Istanbul, served as a poignant reminder of how art transcends geographical boundaries, connecting souls with its universal language.
This sense of connection was further deepened when I received an invitation from a kind-hearted lady in Florence, WI. Despite the distance—a four-hour drive north from my current home in Brookfield—her invitation to teach a class there, and the offer to stay at her lake house, felt like a warm embrace from the universe. Ebru art, much like a gold bracelet worn close to the wrist, has opened doors to new friendships and opportunities, allowing me to meet people and share experiences I never thought possible.
Looking Forward: A Language of Joy and Connection
As I prepare for the upcoming class at Crafters on Central in Florence, WI, my heart is full of gratitude for the journey art has taken me on. Ebru is not just an art form; it is a key that unlocks new worlds, a language through which we connect and communicate beyond words.
To share this beautiful art form with others, to see the joy and wonder in their eyes as they create their first marbling piece, is an honor and a privilege. It reaffirms my belief in the power of art to bring people together, to heal, and to inspire.
As I continue to carry the light of Istanbul and the essence of Ebru art with me, I am reminded of the endless possibilities that await. Each class, each interaction, is a step on a journey that stretches beyond the horizon, enriched by the beauty of art and the connections it fosters.
Thank you, Istanbul, for being the starting point of this incredible journey. And thank you, Wisconsin, for being a home where I can share this journey with others. Here's to the paths we've walked and the ones yet to be discovered, all through the vibrant language of Ebru art.
