Mental health is a sensitive issue. All of us deal with our troubles in different ways. In my life, ebru’s therapeutic side holds great significance. When I start doing ebru, I lose track of time and leave behind all my worries. As an immigrant woman, it is hard to start from scratch and form a circle of friends in the new country. Ebru art is like a magical door that opens up to other people’s hearts. It is a great conversation starter. It is an area that gives me a great sense of achievement and confidence. When you move abroad, your life changes dramatically. The human brain continuously works to process all that input which heavily overloads the mind. Ebru art was my refuge at those times. It was my tradition, my anchor, something from my Turkish roots that I carried with me no matter where I went. The moral and ethical principles of Ebru art guide me to face my challenges and insecurities with courage. It inspires me to live with hope and trust the process. It had helped me overcome my post-natal depression when I was in Turkey and it helped me overcome the culture-shock when we emigrated to Australia. It significantly improved my adaptation process in the USA and reinforced the social ties of my family with others in my community. It also allows me to be productive and help inspire my daughters to chase their dreams no matter what!
I got very excited when I came across this article in the Journal of Human Sciences. I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy...
